This posting is not about spam or WiFi. Today started out with a meeting at the United Way of Northern Fairfield County to help think through some strategic issues with regard to their use of information technology. It is a very good feeling to be able to help non-profit organizations and I highly recommend that all of us do so as often as possible. It is easy to underestimate the significance of what so many of us have learned through our years in business and how valuable that experience can be to a non-profit organization.
This morning we looked at a number of websites that have received awards and acclaim. I particularly liked United Way Capital Area site in Austin, Texas, because it was clear and concise, uncluttered, and was actionable. Many of the other sites we looked at had no actionable items — using the term contributions, as opposed to contribute now, and volunteerism as opposed to volunteer now. It is true of many e-businesses also, that their website is more like their annual report and often does not contain the actions and transactions that can improve their efficiency and deliver responsive service to their customers and constituencies. Working with non-profits can help you sharpen your own thinking about what “for profit” organizations need to do. The financial contributions all of us make are important but an hour of our time is a much more precious gift.
