About this Video

This video is from an SIIA event held in Washington, DC that marked the 10th anniversary of the “Framework for Global Electronic Commerce,” a report released by the Clinton administration and headed by Ira Magaziner. The SIIA event gathered Magaziner, Michael Mandel, chief economist of BusinessWeek, Stewart Baker, Assistant Secretary, Department of Homeland Security; Dan Burton, Senior Vice President, Salesforce.com; Jamie Estrada, Assistant Secretary (Acting), U.S. Department of Commerce and John Patrick, President of Attitude LLC and former Vice President of Internet Technology at IBM.

Summary

Back in 1997 most economists didn’t take the new economy, e-commerce, or technology very seriously. From the economy point of view it wasn’t clear whether the Internet would be a big thing or not. The Framework for Global e-Commerce was instrumental, in that it came out during this period of political and economic uncertainty.
The Framework was precient. Reading it 10 years later, it is not quaint or off the mark. It identified all the key issues. The Internet should be a non-regulatory medium, primarily private, with minimal government interference, and what can you do to facilitate e-Commerce.
According to the SIIA, the top 10 Internet developments were:
10. The Blackberry
9. iTunes
8. YouTube
7. Wi-Fi
6. Open Standards (HTML 4.0 in 1997)
5. Google Adwords
4. Amazon.com IPO in May 1997
3. eBay Auctions
2. Broadband penetration of Internet users reachers 50% in 2004
1. Google
