NORWICH, NY, December 2, 2002 — The Internet continues to transform business, education, entertainment, and almost every other aspect of our lives. Today, even larger changes are coming as the Internet becomes faster, more robust, and more versatile. Visionary thinker John Patrick—former vice president of Internet technology at IBM and author of Net Attitude—understands the ever-expanding potential of the Internet. Mr. Patrick is publicly credited with bringing the Internet to the IBM. Acknowledging his Internet know-how and seeking his advisory expertise, knovel Corporation (www.knovel.com)—a revolutionary web-based reference publisher delivering scientific and technical books and databases to millions of engineers, scientists, and students online—has announced the appointment of John Patrick to its Board of Directors.

“Mr. Patrick’s background and expertise in the Internet industry makes him an ideal choice to help steer knovel as we continue to be the leading provider of Internet publishing solutions for the engineering and applied science community,” said Chris Forbes, president of knovel. “His experience will be especially valued as knovel continues to expand its product offerings and define a new category in interactive science and technical references.”

Mr. Patrick is former vice president of Internet technology at IBM, where he worked for thirty-five years. During his IBM career he helped start IBM’s leasing business at IBM Credit Corporation, and was senior marketing executive for the launch of the IBM ThinkPad brand. Starting in the early 1990s, Mr. Patrick dedicated his time to fostering Internet technologies. One of the leading Internet visionaries, he is quoted frequently in the global media and speaks at dozens of conferences around the world. Business 2.0 named Mr. Patrick as “one of the industry’s most intriguing minds,” Industry Week named him one of the “top 30 people who drive innovation and provide the initial spark to economic growth,” and Network World called him “one of the 25 most powerful people in networking.”

Mr. Patrick is the chairman and a founding member of the Global Internet Project, a founding member of the World Wide Web Consortium at MIT, a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a member of the Internet Society and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He has been an advisor to several Internet companies, including Lou Dobbs’ Space.com, ThirdAge, IntraLinks, and Neoteny. His book, Net Attitude: What It Is, How to Get It, and Why Your Company Can’t Survive Without It, was released in November 2001. Net Attitude reveals strategies and the mind set that allows a company to flourish in the age of a connected world. Drawing from a wide range of examples from the worlds of business, technology, politics, education, and popular culture, Net Attitude explores the profound implications of adopting an Internet attitude and how it will transform the thinking of a business.
